The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and translation research. It supports scientists conducting the most advanced and promising breast cancer research with a minimum of 85 cents of each dollar donated going directly to breast cancer research and awareness programs.

The Oscar Inspired 5 Minute Updo

The 2011 Oscars have come & gone, but what they’ve left behind are the updo inspirations for the rest of the year. The main focus of this year’s event: structured but soft. Now we don’t all have personal stylists or hours in front of the mirror to construct the perfect updo. Not to worry, Bella Toccare’s got you covered. Here is the five minute Bella Toccare updo, inspired by Oscars big night out. (*Tip- second day hair is best for this look).

Minute 1: Tease the hair at the root of the crown area. (Need a tutorial? Scroll through our past blogs for the “How to Tease Tutorial”).

Minute 2: Smooth out any bumps using a comb or a bristle brush.

Minute 3: Choose the location of your base (ie – off to the side, middle of the head, nape of the neck, etc) & split the hair into three sections. Rubber band the middle section into a messy bun.

By now, you've probably heard about keratin treatments that turn frizzy hair into spun silk. But since new reports have surfaced about the toxic chemicals that some of them contain, we turned to the Bella Toccare stylists to find out how to get sexy straight hair - the safe way.

If you love a glossy, pin-straight look,but were born with natural curls, you know what a drag it is to juggle blow dryers and flat irons to get the style you're after. Perhaps this explains the popularity of in-salon Brazilian keratin treatments,whichpromise to liberate women from hair serums and hot tools once and for all. Results last for up to four months, making smooth hair something it's never been: low-maintenance.

This craze hasn't been without its controversy, though. This past fall, a string of government reports and warnings put a serious crimp in the hottest thing to happen to hair in years: The treatment that vowed to transform your tresses could be hazardous to your health.

Most - but not all- salon Keratin treatments produce varying amounts of formaldehyde. The F-word: Not so fast. Because the solution doesn't technically alter the texture of hair, it needs something to lock in those temporary results. That something to lock in those temporary results. That something is what concerns leading health advocates: formaldehyde, a chemical used in low levels in household cleaners, hand soaps, glue, and synthetic fabrics. "In higher concentrations formaldehyde can cause respiratory problems, skin allergies and irritation, and sometimes even cancer," says Richard Parent, a board-certified toxicologist in Damariscotta, Maine. Formaldehyde is released during the final state of the kertain process. Once a kertain-based complex is applied, the stylist flat irons the hair, "freezing" the new texture into place. When that happens, the heat from the iron sends fumes into the air.

The Danger Zone - Last fall, Portland, Orgeon - area stylists began complaining about nosebleeds, eye irritation, and breathing problems after doing repeated treatments, so the Oregon division of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) decided to investigate. It tested samples from Brazilian blowout and several other brands along with the air quality in five Oregon salons. The subsequent report charged that while none of the salon air-quality tests were over the liimit deemed permissible by OSHA, the solution, despite being marketed as "formaldehyde-free" contained up to 10 percent of the preservative.

According to OSHA, to be considered safe, a product should contain no more than 0.1 percent formaldehyde. If it has higher amounts, manufacturers must list it as an ingredient, and employhers should educate workers about how to use the product safely. Though ther Brazilian Blowout brand bore the brunt of the criticism, OSHA found that the Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatment by Coppola and Brazilian Gloss produced too-high levels as well. While the companies claim that their texture-locking ingredients is methylene glycol, cosmetic chemists say this chemical becomes formaldehyde gas when heated. There is a lot of trickery going on here.

She bangs! She bangs! (Sorry, we couldn't resist.) But seriously, the hottest trend on Hollywood heads as we head into spring are thick, eyebrow-grazing bangs. Thinking of making the cut like Rose Byrne? We got the scoop about all things fringe-related so you can get a bangin' new hairstyle.

Know the lingo - Want perfect, side-swept bangs like Dianna Agron? You have to speak the same language as your hairstylist. According to our Stylists at Bella Toccare de Spa and Salon, "Bangs or fringes can be described as heavy, piecey, wispy, light, soft, straight across, arched, angled, blunt, choppy, side-swept, long or very short." adding, "Blunt-cut bangs are thick because they need the weight of the hair to appear drastic. Side-swept bangs can often appear wispy or not as heavy as a thick bang."

You can always get what you want - Don't listen to Mick Jagger. When it comes to your hairstyle, it's easy to get exactly what you want. Want eyebrow-grazing fringe a la Florence Welch? Our Stylists say to bring a picture for reference. Even if you like a particular celebrity's haircut, it may not be the best hairstyle for your hair type, texture or your face shape. They also say that bangs should never be cut while hair is soaking wet or with too much tension.

How to avoid mistakes - Before making the cut, ask yourself, "Can I commit to having bangs? Am I prepared to style the bangs on a daily basis if needed? Can I handle the in-between stages when I decide to grow them out? Can I handle them being in my face or on my forehead?." It's also very important to know if your hair texture is suited to bangs.

Stylists note that choosing the right shape and proportions for your bangs are key. Bangs are best suited to longer or heart-shaped faces. Our stylists agree that it is difficult for women with round faces or small foreheads to wear bangs. Having bangs can enhance the roundness of the face.

Everyone has a type - It's not just your face shape that you have to consider when getting bangs; you also have to think about how your hair type will react to the shorter length. Medium-texture hair that is straight to slightly wavy like Sandra Bullock's is the best for bangs. Really fine, really thick, curly and wiry hair are not well-suited to bangs, and widow's peaks and hairline cowlicks can also make bangs a challenge.

Styling your bangs - "All bangs will require some type of effort," Says our top stylists, "It really depends on the individual's texture and desired look. Try and comb your bangs in the direction you want them to lay when they are wet before any of your hair has time to dry. Use a product with hold if the bang requires you to alter the natural texture of your hair. If you're allowing your bangs to air dry but want to fight frizz, use a water-based serum like our Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss or finishing cream like our Light Elements Texturizing Cream."

Should disaster strike - If it's the way your bangs were cut that you have a problem with, consult another stylist to see if they can be salvaged. If you just don't like the way they look, then you'll have to wait for them to grow out. In the interim, try styling them to the side or pinning them back to blend in with the rest of your hairstyle. Since you can't come to Bella Toccare de Spa and Salon every day here are some tips for at home styling. Follow this easy at-home tutorial and you'll have the perfect sexy Saturday night hairstyle—but don't blame us if your friends ask you to become their stylists.

Step 1: Start by working in a dime size amount of Style Prep Smoother.

Step 2: Rough dry the hair to remove excess moisture.

Step 3: Section hair into 5 sections using duck bill clips.

Step 4: Dry each section using a round boar bristle brush.

Step 5: Roll the hair up into the brush vertically, apply heat and set with a cold shot.

Step 6: Blow dry the top section of your hair back, pin and set with Aveda Air Control or Control Force hairspray and a cold shot.

Step 7: Remove pins, run your fingers through your hair and scrunch!

-Section off the desired teasing area, dropping the very first section (we’re saving that for later). Tip: Think Party hair? You’re going to want it bigger, so move your teasing up higher on top of the head. Everyday tease? Lower & toward the back of the head is fine.

Spring is coming and with it, bikini season. Whether you're planning for a spring break vacation, an anniversary or birthday celebration, or whether you'd just like to fall into a bikini-line grooming habit for the summer, waxing is the best way to remove unwanted hair.

Waxing can seem intimidating and few women readily jump at the chance to expose such a sensitive area to potential pain.

Here are a few tips to conquer your fear.

First, it's important to know the two kinds of bikini waxes available. There's the bikini line wax and the Brazilian wax.

A bikini line wax is just that, a wax that removes hair from the area near the elastic in your underwear or bathing suit bottoms. For this sort of wax, it's not uncommon to leave your underwear or bottoms on while the esthetician simply folds them out of the way and waxes off any hair that would be too near the edge. If this is your first venture into waxing I would recommend this variety to start. This is the least sensitive area and in general, the hair in this region is not as thick or coarse, making the waxing quicker and less painful. A bikini wax can remove only a small amount of hair or, if you chose, can leave you with only a small amount, generally only covering the labia.

A Brazilian wax is intended to remove all of the hair from the bikini region. Your esthetician and you can decide which variety of wax is best for you, depending on your personal choice and comfort with the waxing procedure. A Brazilian has become increasingly popular in the United States and when performed by a licensed beauty technician, it is a perfectly safe procedure. Of course, every woman's threshold of pain varies, but truly a Brazilian wax simply sounds more intimidating than it is.

Don't Gel nails break easier?

I've just had acrylics. Are my nails too damaged to use LCN?

What are semi-permanent eyelash extensions?

They are synthetic eyelashes made of a polyester material. They are made to look like a natural, perfect eyelash -- thicker at the base and thinner at the tip, with a slight curl. They come in different lengths and in many different colors, with the most popular being black. The extensions are slightly thicker than your natural lash to give you the look of a much thicker lash line. One individual synthetic lash is glued to one of your individual lashes with medical-grade glue. When done right, like the highly-trained stylists at Bella Toccare will do, your lashes will look longer and thicker, while still looking natural, and will be perfectly symmetrical and separated. No one will be able to tell that you weren't born with them, and you will not feel that you are wearing them.

· How long do semi-permanent eyelash extensions last?
They will last as long as you choose to maintain them. Your natural eyelash has a 2 to 3 month lifecycle. So, as an eyelash is naturally shed, the extension attached to it will be shed along with it. To start off, we apply a full set of 45+ lashes per eye.

· How often will I need lash refills?

Most of our clients need a refill every 2 to 3 weeks. A basic refill includes up to 20 lashes per eye. If you want a few additional lashes added to your basic refill, they are only $1 per lash. We offer a variety of refill options and packages to suit your needs and your budget.

· How safe are semi-permanent eyelash extensions?

These extensions are synthetic, completely sanitary, and hygienic to apply to the human lash. We use medical-grade glue similar to those used in surgical procedures. The extensions are glued to your lashes, not your skin. Allergic reactions are uncommon. However, should you have an allergic reaction, the extensions can be taken off quickly with our remover solution without damaging your natural eyelashes. Eyelash extensions can be worn indefinitely without causing damage to your natural lashes, so long as they are applied correctly and are properly sized for your lashes. Our technicians are extensively trained in selecting the best and safest extensions for your lashes.

· Can you describe the application process?

The application process is very relaxing and has been compared to receiving a spa service. You lie down on a cushy reclined table and have your eyes closed the entire time. Your initial full set generally takes between 90 to 150 minutes to apply, and refills can be done in as little as 20 - 60 minutes. Many of our clients fall asleep while having their lashes done.

· How do I take care of the extentions?

Semi-permanent eyelash extensions are wonderful because they will replace the need for mascara and provide a low-maintenance makeup routine. The main rules to follow are: keep your extensions dry for 24 hours after they are applied and avoid using any oil-based makeup removers or products on the lashes or around the eyes. Should you decide to use mascara, only water-based mascara can be used on the extensions. The best care for extensions is to just leave them alone, which is why they are so great. You will revel in the time it saves you in the morning when you awake looking bright-eyed and as though your mascara is already applied.

· Why is this service so costly?

First of all, this is a highly technical and skilled procedure. Our technicians are extensively trained - unlike many others out there who simply learn by watching a video or taking a one-day class. We have many clients who come to get their lashes "fixed" after they have been somewhere else. Our technicians take the time required to do the job right. The first full set can take anywhere from 90 minutes to 3 hours depending on the amount of extensions you want. After that, your refills generally take 30 minutes to an hour each time. Our technique consists of separating your natural lashes down to one single hair at a time and gluing a synthetic lash to your individual natural lash. Secondly, there are high-quality and low-quality products and services available in the market. We strive to use the highest quality products – including Xtreme Lashes™. Our combination of great skill and excellent products will show in the longevity and the beautiful, natural appearance of your lashes.

· Are Semi-Permanent Eyelash Extensions for me?

Yes - if you want to have sexier, younger, and well-rested looking eyes. In an effort to escape April’s unseasonably cold, rainy temperatures, I took a quick jaunt to warmer Caribbean climes. To prevent the chain of events that typically accompanies my tropical vacations—i.e., sunscreen negligence that segues into debilitating burns and minimized beach time—I was more diligent than ever before, slathering on layer after layer of Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen, an old stand-by. Except on my head, which was carelessly left exposed to the sun’s evil wrath for much of the trip. Needless to say, my ebony winter dye job turned slightly more red—as did my part, which became even less attractive when the peeling kicked in (ew).
